Abingdon-Avon High School

The 1 + 1 program allows AAHS students to enroll in college courses at a little slower pace due to their high school commitments. You'll take the first year of classes toward your associate in arts (AA) degree. After graduation from AAHS, you'll enroll at Sandburg to complete the rest of your degree requirements. This option still enables you to save money because you could complete a bachelor’s degree in three years instead of four.

The AA degree requires completion of 61 credit hours with a minimum grade point average of 2.0 and focuses on completing general education courses necessary for bachelor’s degrees.

Pathway to 1 + 1 program

This is a plan for the AA degree only. If you want an associate of science (AS) degree, you must meet with a Sandburg academic advisor to develop an individual plan. There is no guarantee you could complete an AS degree in high school due to the availability of classes. Courses may vary based on instructor availability. 

AAHS students will take these courses online, at Sandburg’s campus or at AAHS.

Students taking dual-credit courses must meet Sandburg admissions standards and complete the steps to enroll.

Are you interested in taking classes towards an associate in applied sciences or certificates while in high school? Depending on the availability of qualified faculty, these career degrees or certificates may be offered at AAHS, online or on Sandburg's campus. Students may also complete some of the courses at AAHS, graduate from AAHS and then finish the AAS degree or certificate at Sandburg.

These degrees, offered in the career, technical and health areas prepare the student for the workforce. They are not intended to transfer to a four-year institution. For some of our AAS degrees in healthcare, you must complete a separate application and meet the established requirements for admission.

You must make payment in full or enroll in the payment plan by the set dates for the semester, typically four weeks prior to the start of the term. If payment is not made, you'll be dropped from the courses and will need to re-enroll and arrange payment. 

You may pay with a credit card, check or cash through either campus, Carthage or Galesburg. Deferred payment plans are available; please call our Business Office at 309.341.5281 for further information on payment plans. You may view your balance by logging in to mySandburg, then self-service. 

Dual-credit students receive a tuition discount of 50% for the first four credit hours each semester. 

Tuition calculation example (two classes 2023-23 — $175 per credit hour)

Due to Abingdon-Avon High School’s three-term academic schedule, the dual-credit tuition discount is calculated for the first 4 credit hours. An example for fall, winter and spring terms is below (credit hours in parentheses):

AAHS students must take summer courses to complete the AA degree in high school. Summer courses are part of Sandburg’s regular summer semester; so the dual-credit tuition discount is calculated for the first 6 credit hours. An example for summer is below (credit hours in parentheses):

Dual-credit success scholarships

Offered to students who participated in dual credit during high school. To be eligible for the scholarship, you're required to complete at least six dual-credit hours, complete the FAFSA, have a grade point average at Sandburg of 3.0 or higher, and complete the dual-credit success scholarship application. The college selects and awards these students to promote enrollment following high school. Awards are $1,500 for the first year of full-time enrollment following high school graduation.

College environment

The college learning environment encourages critical thinking and promotes the examination of contrasting perspectives of the world. This is an environment of adult interaction where students will be exposed to concepts, lectures, and materials for adults and adult audiences.

• Internet usage: At the college, there is some restricted internet access; however, student internet usage is not monitored.
  
  
• The college environment: Carl Sandburg College is a community of lifelong learners that welcomes, values and respects diversity. The college fosters a climate of mutual respect that celebrates diversity and inclusion by embracing our similarities as well as our differences. The college stands for tolerance, non-discrimination and cultural sensitivity.
  
  
• Expected conduct: A copy of the Student Code of Conduct is available on the Sandburg website, and all students are expected to behave in adherence to this policy.
  
  
• Course descriptions: Course descriptions for all courses are available through the online catalog. At times, college courses may expose students to graphic depictions or discussions of mature themes.
  
  
• College classroom activities: Classroom activities may include fieldwork, lab experiments with chemicals, career, and technical education courses may include the use of machinery/complex equipment and group work with other students of all ages and backgrounds.

College/course expectations

Enrolled students establish a permanent college academic record and transcript that may be required by future colleges or universities. This permanent academic record may affect eligibility for future financial aid. Students will receive college credit for successfully completed coursework. 

Additionally, students:

• Must access their college grades online (they're not mailed).
• Must be in compliance with all current published college policies, rules,and regulations, and are subject to the same course requirements, grading standards and attendance requirements established by the course instructor in the course syllabus.
• Will be treated like everyone else in the class.
• Will be held to the same expectations as any other student in the classroom and will be expected to follow the course syllabus.
• May be exposed to adult language, discussion, and/or themes in the classroom and on campus, as course content, delivery and assessments will not be altered due to underage students enrolled in the course. 
• Must communicate with the instructor if there are any questions or concerns.
• Should seek assistance for any special needs, such as disability services or tutoring.

Additionally:

• The faculty bear no responsibility for underage students outside of the classroom. Parents/legal guardians are responsible for the students before and after class.
• Parents/legal guardians assume responsibility and liability for the student and will be expected to attend any disciplinary sessions.

FERPA

• If a student is attending a post-secondary institution — at any age — the rights under FERPA have transferred to the student. However, in a situation where a student is enrolled in both a high school and a post-secondary institution, the two schools may exchange information on that student. If the student is under 18, the parents still retain the rights under FERPA at the high school and may inspect and review any records sent by the postsecondary institution to the high school.
